History of the Institute
The institute originates from the Decree of 22 October 1812 by Joachim Murat, and to the organic law of the Archives of the Kingdom of 12 November 1818, n. 1379, which established the Provincial Archives of Southern Italy. The Provincial Archives of Bari, which relies on the Secretariat, was initially allocated at the Hospital of the Swiss, and was transferred to the Intendence Building in 1831. The institute began operations in 1835, and by 1936 was located in the building of the Province of Bari.
Dependent on the State of Bari, there is aSchool ofPalaeography and Diplomatic Archives, and a reprographic department, a bookbinding, restoration and paper industry, the Sections of the State Archives of Trani andBarletta attached.

The Headquarters

In 2007, the Archives moved to its final location on Via Pietro Oreste, n. 45, near the monument formally known as “Citadel of Culture,” which also houses the National Library "Sagarriga Visconti‑Volpi." The collection includes over 30km of shelves containing documentary material.

The institute has a large, bright study room, as well as, indoor and outdoor space for exhibitions and other cultural events.
